Another Artifact From History
After the mind-blowing reveal of Chambellan’s sketchbook, which we are still going through, we have seen hundreds of images spread across decades but concentrated in the 20’s and 30’s. If you were not aware, RPC collaborated with a number of his contemporaries in the Art-Deco era. One of those of note was Lee Lawrie, of Rockefeller Center – ‘Wisdom’ fame. He and Chambellan collaborated on the ‘Atlas’ 3 dimensional sculpture that sits just in front of Wisdom today in the promenade of 30 Rock.

So, Tony asked if I wanted to see Lawrie’s 1936 Porfolio which was gifted to Rene’ Paul. What could I say? Oh yeah!

I knew that they collaborated but I never had a view into Lawrie’s work like what we found in the portfolio on google drive. Here are some samples:

Wasn’t this a time when Absinthe was available? Surely cannabis? Wow. He is definitely rocking some Byzantia with Deco.
I need to spend more time going through these visionary giant’s sketches because I am sure there are some unrealized gems in there that could use miniaturized recreations at some point. If you want to see all of these sketches, I plan to do a series of zoom sessions where I go through them.
